DMC Satin in Hand Embroidery

For a surface that shines like silk in satin stitch, long-and-short and stem stitch, DMC Satin is used: 100% rayon, 6-strand, 8 m and 60 colours matched to floss codes. Preferred for areas that catch the light such as flower petals, feathers, hair, water and fabric folds, and for monogram and name embroidery. This category holds the Satin colours for embroidery; the full guide and colour card are on the DMC Satin page. For matt cotton see floss, for metallic Etoile.

Stitch, Strands and Needle

Satin stitch and fills 2–3 strands (separated, recombined and laid flat), stem stitch and outlines 1–2, French knots 2. A sharp, large-eyed size 7–9 embroidery needle; cut 35 cm lengths and fix the thread in the needle with a knot; slight damp or conditioner reduces slipping. Gives the best result on closely woven cotton, linen and satin fabric; keep the hoop tight. One skein works all the petals of a small flower motif.
