Calico and Buldan Cloth
Calico is a dense, hard-wearing 100% cotton plain weave sold by the metre in white (bleached) and unbleached (ecru); its 220 cm width gives one-piece cuts for sheets and curtains. Buldan cloth is the fine, light, crinkle-textured cotton of Buldan in Denizli, used for muslin scarves, summer clothing and covers. This category carries white calico, unbleached calico, the calico set aside as punch and embroidery cloth, and Buldan cloth. The same fabrics as embroidery grounds are in Embroidery Calico; all types in Calico and Buldan Cloth.
Use in Sewing
Calico is for sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, lining, aprons, bag linings and toiles; unbleached calico for satin-stitch embroidery, punch and natural-look home textiles. Use a size 80 machine needle and polyester thread; it shrinks 3–5% in the first wash, so pre-wash. Sew Buldan cloth with a size 70 needle for scarves and summer blouses and trim the edges with lace or oya.
