Calico, Buldan Cloth and Monk's Cloth
This page gathers the dense cotton ground fabrics at Hobianna: white and unbleached calico (220 cm wide; the all-purpose fabric of embroidery, punch and sewing), Buldan punch and embroidery cloth (235 cm; for the fine punch needle and surface embroidery) and Zweigart Monk's Cloth Fine (the classic punch fabric for medium and thick needles). Branch guides are in Embroidery Calico and Sewing Calico, punch fabrics in Punch Cloth, all fabrics in Fabrics and Aida.
Which Fabric for Which Work?
Calico for satin stitch, stem stitch, fine punch (pearl cotton) and home textile sewing; Buldan cloth with its wide width for punch panels and embroidered cloths; Monk's Cloth for the densest loops in wool and knitting yarn with the medium and thick needle. Fabrics shrink 3–5% in the first wash: pre-wash for embroidery, stretch unwashed and drum-tight for punch. Half a metre yields 4–6 hoop panels.
