Felt in Cross Stitch

Felt does three jobs in cross stitch: it backs finished hoop and wooden Aida panels, it is the base that turns mini pieces into magnets, keyrings and ornaments, and with water-soluble canvas you can cross stitch straight onto it. Here 1 mm thin felt is sold by the metre, 100 cm wide, in black, cream, grey and more. All felt is in Felt.

How to Use It

Backing: cut felt to the inner diameter and fix it with ladder stitch or fabric glue. Magnets and ornaments: glue the stitched Aida to felt, cut with a 3 mm margin and add a magnet. Stitching on felt: baste water-soluble canvas on, stitch with 2–3 strands and dissolve the canvas in lukewarm water, rinsing rather than washing the felt. The edges do not fray, so no overlocking is needed.

How much felt do I need?

0.25–0.5 m is enough for backings and magnets.
