DMC Tapestry Wool in Wool Embroidery

For thick, matte, textured embroidery DMC Tapestry Wool is the most practical thread: a 4-ply twisted wool that sits full in satin and chain stitches, in a palette of more than 380 colours. It suits wildflowers, animal figures, embroidery on sweaters and vests, coat patches and cushion designs. This category lists the wool colours for embroidery; the full guide is in DMC Wool Skeins. For organic, finer wool see DMC Eco Vita, for a glossy thick thread pearl cotton No 5.

Stitches, Needle and Fabric

Long-and-short, chain, stem, leaf and big French knots work best in wool; it is not for fine outlines. Use a size 1–3 sharp chenille needle on dense linen, wool fabric or knitwear, with water-soluble stabilizer to steady stitches on knits. Wool thins with friction, so cut 35–40 cm lengths. One 8 m skein embroiders a small flower; a medium-density design in a 15 cm hoop takes 6–10 skeins. Steam the finished piece from the back over a towel.
