What Is DMC Tapestry Wool?

DMC Tapestry Wool, also called Laine Colbert, is a 4-ply twisted, non-divisible needlepoint yarn made of 100% new wool. It is sold in 8 m skeins and, with its 7000-series colour codes (7003, 7107, 7346 and so on), has the widest tapestry wool colour card in Turkey at more than 380 shades. It is treated against moths and fading; the standard yarn of classic tapestry pictures, cushions and rugs. This page gathers all the DMC Tapestry Wool colours at Hobianna; the wool skein categories in the tapestry, cross stitch, embroidery and punch needle branches link here.

What to Make with Tapestry Wool

Tapestry: full coverage in single-strand half cross (tent stitch) on 10–12 ct printed canvas; the 7xxx codes match the colour card symbols exactly. Punch needle: the most used wool yarn in medium and thick punch needles, ideal for economical, dense and colourful panels, coasters and cushions. Wool embroidery: heavy satin, chain and filling stitches on linen and wool fabric for rustic and vintage designs. Cushions, rugs and pillows: dense loops and durability give long life in home textiles. Pompoms and tassels: the short skein is handy for pompoms, tassels and needle felting.

Canvas, Needle and Quantity

Use a blunt size 18–20 needle in tapestry, size 22 on fine canvas; a medium or thick tip in punch needle. Wool thins with friction, so cut 40 cm lengths and pull gently. One 8 m skein covers about 5×5 cm on 10 ct canvas and 6×6 cm on 12 ct; a 30×40 cm tapestry picture takes 60–90 skeins on average. Buy one extra skein of each main colour and the background in the same dye lot. Steam the finished piece from the back and block if needed.

Tapestry Wool, Eco Vita and Floss

DMC Tapestry Wool is conventionally dyed, 8 m and 380+ colours; DMC Eco Vita is organic and plant-dyed, 16 m and 60 colours. Choose Tapestry Wool for a wide palette, large tapestries and economy; Eco Vita for natural tones and sustainability. Fine, glossy tapestries use DMC floss or pearl cotton; Anchor and other tapestry yarns are in the Tapestry Threads category.
