What Is a Punch Canvas?

A punch canvas is punch cloth stretched over a wooden stretcher frame like a painter's canvas. There is nothing to hoop, tension or hem; when the piece is finished it hangs on the wall in its own frame. We stock 20×20 cm and 35×25 cm canvases in Hobianna punch cloth and in cotton duck, also suitable for embroidery and mixed-media panels. Fabric by the metre is in Punch Needle Fabrics.

How to Use It

Draw the design mirrored on the back, punch from the back with a fine or medium needle and the looped texture forms on the front. The factory tension holds for the whole project. When done, glue the back and cover it with felt. It is the easiest hoop-free start for beginners and children's workshops.

Can I use a thick needle?

Yes on the Hobianna punch-cloth canvas; on cotton duck use fine or medium needles.
