Fabrics for Punch Needle

Punch fabric has a weave dense enough to hold loops yet open enough for the needle to pass without tearing. This category carries the world standard, Zweigart Monk's Cloth (7 ct for thick needles, 13 ct Fine for fine needles), heavy 46-thread cotton duck and raw cloth 220 cm wide, and Hobianna punch cloth by the metre or pre-cut. Stretched canvases, felt and fabric sets are in Punch Needle Fabrics.

Which Fabric for Which Needle?

For the thick (yarn) needle, Monk's Cloth 7 ct is the most forgiving. Medium and fine needles work best on Monk's Cloth Fine 13 ct or dense 46-thread duck. No pre-washing is needed; overlock the edges, transfer the design mirrored to the back and mount it very tightly in a locking punch frame.

What can replace monk's cloth?

Heavy cotton duck and linen; for fine needles a dense cotton poplin also works.
