Other Ground Fabrics for Embroidery

For satin stitch, stem stitch and modern embroidery the fabric must be densely woven, smooth and hold its tension in the hoop. This category collects the grounds outside calico and duck: FL11 natural linen (36 ct, 180 cm wide), Etuval Pera and Etuval Linen linen-look cottons and DMC Eco Vita embroidery fabric. Which Fabric for Which Embroidery?

Natural linen is the classic ground for botanical and vintage embroidery and also suits counted work; Etuval Pera and Linen give the linen look more economically and press more easily, ideal for hoop art and T-shirt or bag appliqué; DMC Eco Vita fabric is a naturally coloured cotton ground matched to Eco Vita wool. Cut 8–10 cm larger than the hoop and allow for first-wash shrinkage; half a metre yields 4–6 hoop panels.
