Floss for Hand Embroidery
Floss is the basic thread of hand embroidery: its 6 strands let you set the thickness for every stitch, from fine outlines to full satin stitch. This category carries the 500-colour DMC floss, glossy DMC Satin, colour-changing Coloris and Color Variations, Anchor floss and economical Bulgarian floss for course projects.
Strands by Stitch, and Brand
Stem stitch and outlines take 1–2 strands, satin and filling 3–6, French knots 2–3, lettering 2. DMC and Anchor are the standard for colourfastness and even twist, and modern embroidery kits are keyed to DMC codes. Coloris gives colour shifts in leaves and flowers with one thread; Satin adds shine to highlights; Bulgarian floss saves money on large background areas.
