The Thread of Hand Embroidery: DMC 117

Modern embroidery kits, botanical designs and traditional work are keyed to DMC 117 floss codes: 6-strand, 8 m, double mercerised cotton thread in 500 colours. This category lists every colour of DMC 117 for the embroidery branch by code number; search the code from the design's colour list and add it straight to the basket. The full guide to the range and all DMC floss types are on the main DMC Floss page, the colour code list on the DMC 117 page.

Strands and Needle by Stitch

Stem stitch and outlines 1–2 strands, satin and fill 3–6, chain 3, French knots 2–3, lettering 2; use different strand counts in one design for weight contrast. A sharp embroidery needle size 9–10 for 1–2 strands, 7–8 for 3–4, 5–6 for 5–6 strands. Cut 40–45 cm lengths, separate the strands one by one and recombine. One skein is enough for the main colour of a small motif; a 15 cm hoop panel takes 8–15 skeins. For glossy, metallic and shaded options see Satin, Etoile and Color Variations; for a non-divisible thread Broder Special.
