Everything for Punch Needle Embroidery

Punch needle (rug hooking's faster cousin) pushes yarn loops through a tightly stretched fabric with a hollow needle. Hobianna carries every part of the technique: Nurge and KnitPro punch needles with wooden handles and interchangeable tips, Monks Cloth and Turkish punch cloth, Hello Cotton, Hello Easy, Gazzal and YarnArt punch yarns, Calin clip frames (Hobianna's own brand), plastic punch hoops, PeVeA punch glue and finishing felt. See Punch Needles, Punch Needle Threads and Punch Needle Fabrics.

Kits for Beginners, Materials for Makers

If you are starting out, a punch needle kit from Hello or Tuva includes fabric with the printed design, yarn, needle and instructions. Makers building their own projects can choose needle size by yarn weight: the thick needle for Hello Cotton and Gazzal, the fine needle for three strands of DMC or pearl cotton No. 5. Loops are locked at the back with punch glue, so finished pieces become cushions, wall hangings and rugs.

Fabric Tension Is the Secret

Punch needle only works on fabric stretched drum-tight. The Calin clip frame, designed by Hobianna for punch needle, grips the fabric on all four sides and wastes no fabric in the corners; a plastic no-slip punch hoop is fine for small round designs. Our Punch Needle Hoops category lists all options, and Punch Needle Books includes Tuva's Modern Punch Needle guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fabric is best for punch needle?

Monks Cloth (7 or 13 count) is the standard; Turkish punch cloth is a good-value alternative and large-count Aida works with fine needles.

Do I need to glue the back?

Yes for items that will be handled or washed. A thin coat of PeVeA punch glue locks the loops; wall hangings can be left unglued.

Can children punch?

Children from about 8 can use the fine needle with adult help; Hello kits with plastic needles are designed for younger makers.
