Pearl Cotton

Pearl cotton is a non-divisible single-ply twisted, glossy mercerised cotton thread; unlike floss it is not separated, and it gives a full stitch in satin stitch, hardanger, edging lace, punch needle and large-count cross stitch. This page gathers all the pearl cotton at Hobianna: DMC Coton Perlé No 5 (25 m skein, heavy), No 8 (80 m ball, medium) and No 12 (120 m ball, fine) in every colour; YarnArt Iris as the economical perle. Branch guides are under Cross Stitch, Embroidery, Tapestry and Punch Needle; all threads in Embroidery and Cross Stitch Threads.

Which Size?

The higher the number, the finer the thread. No 5 is for a medium punch needle, large-count cross stitch (8–11 ct) and heavy satin stitch; No 8 for hardanger, 14 ct cross stitch, edging and stem stitch; No 12 for fine hardanger, monograms and 16–18 ct cross stitch. DMC colour codes match floss; the code on the chart applies to perle too.
