Floss Types for Cross Stitch

Stranded cotton (floss) is the standard cross stitch thread: 6 strands, 100% cotton, sold in 8 m skeins, and you adjust the strand count to the fabric count. This category holds the 500-colour classic DMC Mouliné 117 range, glossy DMC Satin, DMC Floche, Anchor stranded cotton and budget Bulgarian floss for school and course projects. Colours match the DMC and Anchor codes in your charts exactly.

How Many Strands, Which Brand?

Use 2–3 strands on 14 ct Aida, 2 on 16–18 ct, 3–4 on 11 ct. DMC and Anchor are the industry standard for colourfastness and even twist; stitching with the brand the chart was keyed to avoids colour drift. Satin adds shine to highlights; Bulgarian floss is the economical choice for large background areas.

How much does one skein cover?

About 15×15 cm of full coverage on 14 ct with 2 strands.
