The Standard Tapestry Thread: DMC Tapestry Wool
Most tapestry colour keys are written in DMC Tapestry Wool codes; this 8 m, 4-ply, non-divisible wool gives full coverage in half cross on printed canvas with a single strand. This category lists more than 380 colours in 7xxx codes for needlepoint; the full guide with punch and embroidery uses is in DMC Wool Skeins. For an organic alternative see DMC Eco Vita, for fine glossy work floss.
Skein Count and Stitching
One skein covers about 5×5 cm on 10 ct and 6×6 cm on 12 ct: a 30×40 cm picture needs 60–90 skeins, a 50×70 cm one 150–200. Buy one extra of the main colours and the background from one dye lot. Use a size 18–20 blunt tapestry needle, cut 40 cm lengths and pull gently. Keep the stitch direction constant and work in a clip frame or scroll frame to prevent distortion; steam from the back and block if needed.
