Crochet Hook Types

How to Choose a Hook Size

The size is the tip thickness in millimetres, matched to the yarn label: amigurumi 2–3 mm, summer cotton 3.5–4.5 mm, winter 5–6 mm, blankets and chunky yarn 7–10 mm, lace and needle lace 0.6–1.5 mm. In amigurumi a hook half a size smaller gives a firm fabric. Silicone-grip hooks suit long sessions, aluminium hooks speed, steel hooks fine thread; sets are practical for beginners and gifts.
