Floss in Tapestry

Traditional tapestry is stitched in wool, but on fine canvas and small pieces 4–6 strands of DMC floss give a finer, glossier, more detailed result. Because tapestry keys are usually written in DMC codes, this category lists the 500 colours of the 117 range, Satin and colour-changing series from the tapestry angle. All DMC floss families and the usage guide are in DMC Floss; wool is in DMC Wool Skeins.

How Many Strands, Which Needle?

Use 6 strands on 10–12 ct canvas, 4 on 14 ct and 2–3 on 18 ct and petit point, with a size 20–24 blunt needle. Six strands stitch about 8 metres from one skein; count skeins by the symbol totals on the key and buy extra background. Half cross goes faster in floss; keep the stitch direction constant for full coverage.
