What Is DMC Floche?
DMC Floche (Coton Floche à broder) is a lightly twisted, matt and very soft 100% cotton embroidery thread; it comes in 10 g balls and is used single, its weight between pearl cotton No 12 and 2 strands of floss. Thanks to mercerised cotton it gives a velvety surface close to the look of silk but without shine. It is the classic thread of traditional French whitework, monograms, satin stitch embroidery and fine outline work; in punch needle it gives dense loops with a fine needle. This page gathers the DMC Floche products at Hobianna; the Floche categories in the cross stitch and embroidery branches link here. Colours in stock appear in the product list by number; ecru and white are the most chosen tones.
What to Make with Floche
Whitework and monograms: names, letters and edge decorations on linen in padded satin, stem stitch and chain; the untwisted thread fills the stitches like velvet. Satin stitch embroidery: a flatter, softer surface than floss in long-and-short; a silky texture in leaves and petals. Hardanger and blackwork: a fine, smooth line in wrapping and fills. Punch needle: dense, matt loops with a fine needle; lettering and details. Cross stitch: a single-strand matt cover on 16–18 ct.
Needle and Stitching
On closely woven linen and cotton use a sharp size 7–9 embroidery needle, on aida and evenweave a blunt size 24–26; cut 40 cm lengths, stitch single and lay the stitches flat. As it has little twist, hold the thread loosely without twisting; if it twists, let the needle hang and untwist. A 10 g ball is enough for a monogram set or a medium satin stitch motif. Washes up to 60°C, iron from the back; ideal for whitework. For a glossy alternative see DMC Satin, for a heavy twisted thread DMC Pearl Cotton, for solid colours DMC Floss.
