DMC Variegated in Cross Stitch
The variegated thread most used in classic cross stitch charts and towel borders is DMC's 48–125 series: in 6-strand, 8 m cotton floss two or three tones of one colour change at short intervals. Hearts, alphabets, borders and single-colour motifs look shaded on their own with this thread. This category holds the variegated codes for cross stitch; the full guide and code list are on the DMC Variegated page. For a long-transition gradient see Color Variations, for four colours Coloris.
Strands, Technique and Quantity
2 strands on 14 ct aida, 3 on 11 ct and towel borders, 1 on 16–18 ct; complete each cross one at a time for the tone transition and combine the strands from the same end. Blunt size 24 needle, 40–45 cm lengths. An 8 m skein works about 250 stitches on 14 ct; 1–2 skeins are enough for a towel border motif row. Wash at 40°C, iron from the back.
